About Us

At the center of the sleepy cross-roads, 17th century village of Wall, New Jersey, known as Allenwood sits the Allenwood General Store.

Operated since 1972 by the Herbert family, John and June Herbert purchased the building from the estate of the Feimster family who had operated a country store on the site since 1925.

The original Allenwood General Store which was last operated by the Kell family just 100 yards up the road closed in the late 1960s. According to the Old Wall Historical Society, a general store has operated on or near that site since at least the 1850s when postmaster Thomas Allen, a descendent of one of the villages’ original settlers, was behind the counter.

The Herbert’s, after determining that the name was available for use, reestablished the inside back to an old general store atmosphere and mounted a new Allenwood General Store sign over the front door. The original black and white is mounted on a wall in the store where it serves as a reminder of “those who have come before.”

When John and June Herbert felt it was time to retire, their youngest son Jeffrey decided he did not want the store to disappear or be changed by outsiders. He purchased the store from his parents in 2006. Today Jeffrey and his wife Heather are the proprietors behind the counter, carrying on the long tradition of a General Store in Allenwood.

The store serves up fresh homemade food for breakfast & lunch. Everything is home made in house, including Heather's organic soups & chili's. The entire building is an antique shoppe, with everything inside being for sale. We have the great benefit of being located directly on the Edger J. Felix bike path, which runs from the heart of Manasquan into the historical village at Allaire State Park. We are a perfect destination along your bike ride, dog walk, or bird watching excursion. Seating is available both inside & out year round.

A tasty rueban and delicious sweet potato fries. Reasonable pricing and terrific service. We loved the ambience of the eatery connected to a antique store. I enjoyed the sign "This is not a museum this junk is for sale". We have a puppy and outdoor tables accomadated us nicely...
